Will Head Lice Repellent Really Make a Difference?

If you have had a recent warning about head lice in your community, you may be tempted to purchase a head lice repellent from your pharmacy. However, these treatments are not always as effective as you might think, and they can prove to be quite expensive.

The truth is, the commercial products claiming to prevent infestations could actually reduce the risk of a possible infestation, but occasionally, some insects can still make a home on a host that is being treated with the said product. After all, kids will be kids. With this in mind, it is far more cost effective to make your own home brewed insect repellent at home. At least if your home made product is not as effective as you hoped, you wont have wasted a lot of money needlessly.

How to Make a Homemade Head Lice Repellent

Essential oils are a common ingredient in homemade preventative solutions. The most common essential oils used by parents are tea tree and eucalyptus oil. Both have very strong smells, and both are renowned for their natural antiseptic properties, amongst other things.

There are no products containing these oils that have been approved or recommended by a health authority; however, medical professionals admit that there is no harm in using these substances as a home brewed remedy for infestations, and many parents swear by the use of essential oils.

You can mix a few drops of the essential oils in with your normal shampoo and conditioner. Leave the shampoo to work a little longer than usual to appreciate the benefits of the home made mixture.

Alternatively, mix the oils with warm water, and use the mixture with a spray bottle. The mix can be sprayed on wet or dry hair.

They can also be mixed with carrier oils such as olive oil and coconut oil, and used in the smothering technique.

Helpful Tools for an Infestation

As well as having your own repellent, you should definitely invest in a good nit comb. These combs can be used with the wet combing method, and can be used daily alongside any other chemical or medical treatments. Nit combs are readily available from your pharmacy.

Some parents prefer the electronic nit combs. These combs carry an electric shock that kills the insects on the scalp and their eggs, making them easier to remove, but be aware that these particular combs cannot be used with the wet combing method. If you intend to use this method, look for a manual comb with metal teeth instead. These work far better than the plastic complimentary combs and are more practical for use with the wet comb method.

Although repellents will reduce the risk of infestations, this is by no means the only way you can help prevent an infestation. By adopting a few other changes, such as keeping long hair tied back at all times, and teaching children about how the parasites are transmitted, you should find that the risk of an infestation occurring is reduced further.

The important thing to remember is not to rely on any single solution alone to prevent infestation problems in your home. Instead, use the repellent, the nit comb, and some practical advice daily. The combination of solutions and remedies will help you stave off possible parasitic invasions. However, it is still no guarantee. Persistence is still the best prevention tool at your disposal; so have patience, be diligent, and use a homemade repellent to help save money.
