Durg is a prominent religious place located in the state of Chhattisgarh. The place is known as an agricultural market located in the eastern bank of the Seonath River. The place is located under the Durg District, the third largest district of Chhattisgarh. The town is landscaped with many religious shrines and thus it is marked as a well visited pilgrim spot of the state. The town is referred as a cultural hub of Chhattisgarh. Durg became prominent as it is closely located to Bhilai, a steel city of Chhattisgarh. The name of the city Durg is taken from Shiva Durg and it was built by King Shiva Deva. Based on the mythologicla theory, the place was a part of southern Kosala and the place is closely related to the epic Ramayana as King Dasaratha married to Kosalaya, the princess of Kosala. It was an independent district in 1906 and it led a vital role in the Indian freedom movement. The place holds the unique heritage and culture of Chhattisgarh. Pandwani, a dance forms which is quite famous and related to Mahabharata. Soowa, Raut Nacha, Panthi are other dance form of Durg. Among them Raut Nacha is the old traditional dance form of this place. Deorbhijia Temple is a prominent landmark of Durg. This old temple attracts many pilgrims every year. This ancient temple is standing in ruins but it holds a great mythological value. In the month of September-October the place became very crowded with huge number of devotees. The other famous shrine is the Goddess Ganga temple which is located between the road of Durg to Balod. The Sheorinarayan Temple dates back to 13th century. It is a one of the most visited ancient place of Durg and allures many tourists for its excellent architectural skills. Tandula is a picnic spot. Apart from these Durg offers a good option of hiking and birding. Uwasaggaharam Parshwa Teerth is a eminent Jain shrine which is situated in Nagppura. The temple is believed to have built in 1995 and holds a divine idol of Parshwanath. The people of Durg also have a great tendency towards adopting new trends and life styles. Durg thus is multicultural for people from all over India have come and settled in this region. The people of this region are very fond of colors. The dresses they wear are very colorful. Women wear sarees with Kardhani. In rural areas women wear mala made of one rupee coins. Though this has gone out of trend these days. The people of this region are also known for creating humour out of language. Comical plays are very popular and are worth watching. Durg is rich in its cultural heritage. Durg has its own dance styles, cuisine, music. Pandwani the musical narration of the epic Mahabharata, \”Raut Nacha.\” Durg generally has a dry tropical weather which is moderate but on a warmer side in summer season. The peak temperatures are usually reached in May/June and can be as high as 45C. The onset of monsoon is usually from July and the season extends up to September, with monsoon peaking during July and August.
